How to Celebrate Gal-entine’s Day in Style

This year, red is dead. We’re kicking out Valentine’s day (and all its annoying habits) and introducing Gal-entine’s day. The saying ‘Gal-entine’s day’ comes from US sitcom Parks and Recreation and falls on the 13th of February. It is a day to celebrate being an independent woman with your friends.

We’ve found the three most popular ways to celebrate Gal-entine’s day (or weekend) and forget about all that romantic nonsense.

A spa weekend

If you’re looking for a weekend (or even just a day) to relax and unwind this Gal-entine’s day, then a spa break is definitely for you! Grab your friends (or treat your mum) and head to one of the many tranquil spas dotted throughout the country.

Picture this: you’re dressed in a crisp-white dressing gown, sipping on a glass of bubbles while a masseuse massages your aches and pains away. Sounds bliss doesn’t it?

Loosen up as you unwind in the cosy relaxation room and allow your worries to float away. Wash away any negative emotions and cleanse your pores as you glow in an accumulation of steam in the hot sauna. Did you know that a visit to a sauna can increase your blood flow and help to reduce tension in your joints, as well as relieve sore muscles?

After a morning of pampering, why not enjoy a healthy three-course buffet lunch with copious amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables, to give you the vitamins your body craves. Or, book in advance and indulge in a luxurious afternoon tea to fill you up before you spend the rest of the day meditating, demonstrating your best yoga poses and even experiencing a Pilates class.

If you get restless, you could always take a run in picturesque country gardens, or work your muscles in an aqua fitness class. With so much to choose from and so many deals online, a spa break doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. So, you can pamper yourself without the guilt– and what better time than Gal-entine’s day?

A trip to Barcelona

Barcelona - if it’s good enough for the Cheetah Girls, then it’s good enough for us (please Google them if you have no idea what we’re talking about). Surrounded by sun, sea and sangria, Barcelona is the ultimate destination for a group of girlfriends looking for a little R&R (and some February sunshine too).

For a taste of history, why not take a trip to Barcelona’s famous Sagrada Familia? For as little as €15 you can experience the basilica’s beautiful stained-glass windows and fantastic architecture, whilst enjoying 136 years of worship. Amazing!

Spend an evening visiting the vibrant Las Ramblas strip and enjoy an assortment of shops, restaurants and lively karaoke bars. I mean, what better place to scream the lyrics to Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and sing your broken heart out? (Just kiddin’!)

A trip to Barcelona is not complete without devouring as many small plates of tapas as possible. We recommend celebrating Gal-entine’s day with an evening of traditional Spanish food, laughs which make your belly hurt and gal-avanting from bar to bar (get it!)

A night in a log cabin

Fancy a night away that’s a little different? Well, how about a trip to a secluded log cabin surrounded by nothing trees and great company? (Not to mention a steamy hot tub and couple of bottles of fizz to kickstart your evening!)

Not only will you escape from all the loved-up couples, but you can enjoy an evening full of chick flicks, chocolate, chats and a cheeky glass of Chardonnay - with no romantic distraction in sight! And what better day to celebrate your friendship than a day that’s all about love?

Channel your inner teen as you and your friends snuggle down in front of the fire for an evening of reminiscing and indulgence overload. We know as we get older, the chance to spend a whole evening with your friends gets harder, so why not take advantage of this rare opportunity and go all out by purchasing matching pyjamas? It will be a night to remember and make for great Insta’ pics.

There are so many log cabins available to hire and at just a click away, there’s really nothing to stop you!
