The Urban Beach Clean
Alpha has joined forces with global marine charity, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), to raise awareness of the shocking impact waste has on our oceans.
Protecting marine life is an important part of sustainability and (if you didn’t know), it’s something very close to our hearts. So far, with your help, we have managed to raise over £12,000 for the WDC, which has gone towards The SEALIFE Trust Beluga Sanctuary Project. They say actions speak louder than words, so some of the Alpha team and a few of the lovely lot from WDC headed to our local Maidstone High Street and took part in the ultimate #UrbanBeachClean.
Equipped with rubbish pickers, black bags and dressed in our finest WDC t-shirts, we spent the morning cleaning up the town and collected five bags of rubbish, including 23 plastic bottles, 246 cigarette butts, 150 packets, 34 tins, and cans, not to mention car and computer parts.
Although Maidstone high street might seem like a strange place to start, the litter that we find in our towns ultimately end up in rivers and seas. It’s devastating to know that we are killing innocent sea life out of pure laziness, using their home as a second dumping ground.
Litter often blows along streets, falls into drains, and then travels through streams and rivers until it eventually makes its way into the sea. This is where it entangles whales and dolphins - or is eaten by them by mistake.
We want to encourage more people to get involved and help reduce the amount of litter in our towns and cities. Whether that’s taking part in an urban beach clean yourself or just being more mindful of where you put your rubbish – it all makes a difference.
We would like to say a massive thank you to the WDC, for coming down to our offices and helping us spread awareness to make a difference!
